Virtual design and construction workflows and the growing adoption of BIM are beginning to revolutionise the construction industry.
Traditional stationary laser scanners have evolved over time to be more accurate, powerful and faster than previous generations. In parallel, however, SLAM-based mobile and handheld scanners have carved out a niche of their own. These smaller scanners do not rely on GPS, but rely on algorithms to discover where the scanner is in relation to its surroundings. Many can scan continuously while on the move, dramatically reducing capture time, and can be brought into challenging environments more easily.
While early SLAM scanners might not have some short accuracy, the newest generation of sensors and algorithmic breakthroughs are game changers.
The opportunities for construction and engineering firms to digitise their workflows have never been greater.
